Online education: How synchronous eLearning works

An online college education is available in a variety of platforms with various requirements. One model of eLearning is the synchronous learning model. This approach to online classes requires the adult student to be available at the same time their online instructor will be available.

Basically, if your program has online courses which are offered in 2-hour blocks that run from 5PM EST to 7PM EST, you need to be online at this same time. In the synchronous model of online college programs, both students and instructors are working on course work at the same time.

In this model of adult learning, students find they are able to pose questions and concerns to their instructors right away. Similar to the traditional classroom, the synchronous online course, or online classroom, offers students the opportunity to interact in a live-platform both with peers and online faculty.

The synchronous model is used by many colleges and universities throughout the world for online courses which they deem are best delivered when both students and instructors are working simultaneously towards common online course goals. What do you suppose are the benefits of such a model of learning?
